Madison at Manhattanville

This is Madison. She is a bold young lady. She liked my drawing  and told me so. Then she and sat down after she finished her homework she immediately set up shop and started drawing ponies. She needed color and luckily I had the pencils the lady friend lent me. Now we have talked about ponies, "equestrians" (pronounced properly) "Cess Academy" (pronounced improperly... I hope) and she has decided that she will draw with me every day. My first new NYC friend! She is a student at Harper Arts and Science. She designed a computer with ponies on it. I haven't drawn in 30 minutes... some things are more important, I'm learning. She wanted me to help her draw her friend Jenny, the batista. She asked me to draw the lips for her. Nailed it. #prismacolorpencils #blackgirlmagic  # drawing #ponies #cessacademy

WOMEN'S MARCH (#YESALLWOMEN)

It's that time again!!!  # FBF  of  # AMERICANHISTORYMONTH . This photo gallery is brought to you by my mother and called...  # WOMENSMARCH !! It took me along time to write this... pardon me if I say something stupid. Feminine is a funny Word. I cannot define the phenomenon of feminine, for it is neither my place nor my aim... but I like it. For many reasons in many ways, always. In some societies it is softness. The wilting flower. The tender petals. In some cultures it is rubenesque. In some thin. Sometimes Athena, sometimes Oshun....  blah blah blah. But... Quick Tale: When I was growing up, I had a diverse array of friends of all light frequencies. And I never thought much of it. Once I had a conversation with my mother about how she sometimes felt uneasy around groups of white men and women. I found this weird, as my mom's friends were also Bennetton-ad-esque. She pointed out to me that her difficulty with Whit...

First Nights in Company Housing

The problem with staying in hotels is that every once in awhile you remember that someone, many people have had sex on the bed upon which you rest your head while watching Netflix. The truly awful thing about corporate apartments is that all of those people have faces. Clear, wholesome, smiling faces. And while you imagine them these faces tell corny jokes about healthy relationships and give sh itty innuendos to their partners... whose faces I also recall in detail. Then I consider that they probably did some trail running or rock dancing (offbeat) just before they did it...probably in the middle of the day or at like 7 before they went out for sushi or something involving Quinoa. It haunts me at night... I'm so fucking tired.
REST IN PEACE, BERNARD. Bernard Sahlins has died at 90 When I was 21 I sat at the Starbucks under Second City and had coffee with this man. I really just wanted to know what the secret to a long career in the theatre might look like for me. He asked me. "Well, what do you want to do?" In my earnest and unwavering voice I said simply said, "I want to WORK." In one of few moments, his smile left his face and In that familiarLY soft, wavy, gentle voice he chastised, "Well, that's boring. If you want to work, then go make it yourself." To this day, that moment drives me forward. I will always remember that the man who invited Heavy Hitters to see me in a fucking school play fell asleep as the commencement speaker to UIC's class of 2004 (and multiple rehearsals, of course). He may have no natural born children, but I'm sure many will be wishing this man a happy and peaceful Fathers' Day. Rest in peace, Bernie. "Yes, and..."
